You either love them or think they are a fashion faux pas, but Crocs are making a huge fashion comeback. During London Fashion Week, designer Christopher Kane debuted his new fall 2017 collection and brought back one of the most hated shoes on the planet. Even New York Magazine listed these lightweight, waterproof and very uncool shoes as one of the “50 Ugliest Shoes in History,” and unless you’re a doctor, nurse or on your feet 24/7, you are allowed to wear these holey shoes on your feet.
Crocs have gotten a bad rap since they were unveiled in 2002. And in 2006, the fashion world was stunned at how well these breathable slippers were selling when the sales were only increasing. Tim Gunn, known for his fashion advice on the hit show “Project Runway” told Time magazine: “… the Croc – it looks like a plastic hoof. How can you take that seriously?” People hated the shoe so much, there was even a blog created by two college students called IHateCrocs.com. And it didn’t stop there. Crocs were number six on the “Worst” list of Maxim’s “The 10 Best & Worst Things to Happen to Men in 2007.”
However, the company doesn’t look like they’re going broke anytime soon. In 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama was spotted wearing Crocs, and in 2015, 23-month-old Prince George, the son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, wore a pair of navy blue Crocs in a photograph. Sales of the shoe increased 1,500 percent after people saw the little prince dawning the shoe. Now, designer Christopher Kane is bringing the shoe back in fashion, but with a slight change.
While models like Lais Van Niel and Tamara Ryzhenko walked down the runway during the showcase of his 2017 Fall collection, they were wearing Crocs lined with fur. The Crocs company has already created a shoe lined with Ugg-like fur for $69.99, but we’re sure if a well-known designer creates them, they’re going to be worn by every fashionista out there, right? Stars like Katy Perry were sitting front row of Kane’s show and you can believe they were all starring at the furry Crocs. The plastic slip-ons were in both black and white with fur linings, making them a new fashion trend.
It is no surprise that Kane debuted these fur-lined Crocs at his show since he has done it before. Last season, the designer debuted a line of jeweled and bedazzled marbled Crocs, which went for a whopping $350 a pair and were almost completely sold out. Kane’s 2017 Fall collection of Crocs will start at around the same price and you can get yourself a dirt brown color, or black and white, if they are still available.
If you thought his collection of both furry and bedazzled Crocs was bad enough, the Scottish fashion designer also came out with heels that literally have sponges attached to them. Maybe he was feeling inspired while doing the dishes or watched too much Sponge Bob SquarePants, but one thing is for sure: these shoes are a little ridiculous, but if you’re interested, come in a variety of different colored sponges. One person was so displeased with Kane’s footwear that she tweeted, “Tbh the shows in Christopher Kane’s f17 rtw collection bothered me so much. Why was there foam. Why were there crocs. Just why. Why.” We’re pretty sure a lot of people felt the same exact way when they were watching Kane’s models wear some funky shoes down the runway.
If you are one of those few people who want a pair of Kane’s Croc creations, but don’t have the $350 to spend, you can DIY and attach your own jewels or glue on your own fur. Or you could spend the $69.99 on the original fur-lined Crocs out there. We can’t wait to see what Christopher Kane has up his sleeve for his next runway show!
