Halloween has always been a great excuse to scare the living daylights out of family members, neighbors, and just about anyone else. The holiday is about having fun, dressing up, and getting all the candy you can imagine. Halloween pranks aren’t new, either. From scary props that jump out at you to food that’s supposed to feel like brains, people love to do all they can to make their Halloween spooky and frightening. Of course, it’s all in good fun, because that’s what the holiday’s about!
One Wisconsin man really outdid himself this past Halloween, and it was a move that was either terrifying or downright genius. Michael Irvine, a 50-year-old man from Peshtigo, Wisconsin, wanted to scare his two daughters this Halloween. He knew his daughters were huge fans of the Harry Potter series, but he also knew they have always been afraid of Dementors. If you follow the series, you already know from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban that these dark creatures “are among the foulest creatures that walk this earth. They infest the darkest, filthiest places, they glory in decay and despair, they drain peace, hope, and happiness out of the air around them … Get too near a Dementor and every good feeling, every happy memory will be sucked out of you.” The description alone is enough to raise some hairs on your arm, so it’s not surprising Irvine’s daughters want nothing to do with Dementors.
Knowing that his daughters would have a terrifying reaction to these dark and evil creatures, Irvine decided to create his own spooky Dementor. In a move that some might call brilliant, Irvine made his creation by combining some fishing line with an old Halloween prop. However, knowing that these dark creatures fly in the air, Irvine had the great idea to put the huge prop on a drone. Irvine thought his Dementor was so good that he flew it around southern Wisconsin to scare even more people. Would you get spooked seeing this ghostly figure flying through the air?
Naturally, people were less than calm about the scary Dementor flying around town. The Harry Potter series will forever be a classic story, adored by many, so you would assume people who saw this skeletal figure in the air would take it as a simple joke. However, many people in the town of Peshtigo went as far as believing there might have been a real person hanging from the drone. That might have been a bit of an overreaction, but people in the neighborhood wanted to make sure that it really was just a harmless prank. That’s when Irvine’s nephew had to take matters in his own hands to reassure people that it wasn’t a real person.
Twitter user Zac Crueger tweeted, “Yo!! Too [sic] all y’all with thick heads my uncle isn’t hanging from the drone. Smh.” Crueger decided to post a live video of the Dementor flying around in the sky to show Twitter users not to worry. In the video, you can see the scary-looking creature flying on top of buildings as if it were a harmless bird. It also seems to fly pretty fast through the sky, narrowly missing the tops of some tall trees. Since finding out about his uncle’s prank and posting photos on his Twitter page, Crueger’s tweet has been retweeted more than 160,000 times and liked by over 200,000 users. People who understood the prank loved it, and hundreds of people thought it was impressive. One Twitter user wrote, “Some men just want to watch the world burn. Jeepers.” Another Twitter user wrote, “This is the best use for a drone I’ve ever seen.”
Crueger also stated that the idea came up while the he and his uncle were watching a football game. “He came up with the idea during the recent Packer game half time. His daughters are Harry Potter fans,” he said, adding, “I think it’s genius and funny.”
Irvine promises to keep flying his Dementor around town every Halloween, assuming the weather allows it. His daughters might not be big fans of the dark creature, but it looks like a lot of people thought his prank was one of the funniest and most harmless this Halloween.
