Funny, but all too real.
We’ve all been there. You have a day—or night—ahead, filled with exciting plans. You can be going to the movies, or on a date, or out for a night on the town…until it hits you. You’re tired. Not just “I need a coffee or a soda and I’ll be fine tired,” either. This is a, “I can’t even keep my eyelids open for one second” kind of tired. Of course, when we have big things ahead, we sometimes try to go through with them anyway…even when we should probably just go to bed.
Now imagine being a little kid, where every possible moment is filled with exciting new experiences. There’s a lot to do—and you probably don’t control your own schedule—but, as a kid, naptime and awake-time are of equal importance. Here are some little guys and girls that try, desperately, to stay awake, even as their bodies tell them otherwise.
Sometimes, when you go somewhere, you have to make the most of it. Give credit where it’s due to this little guy. He tried, so hard, and it seems like he almost made it. That said, his mom still lets him do what they came there for—and that means, sleep or no sleep, this baby is going in the ball pit. A play center may not be as fun when you’re catching z’s, but at the end of the day, sometimes getting your money’s worth is what’s most important.
Have you ever gotten so tired—whether you were on your way to class or getting ready for work in the morning—that almost everything started to look like a feasible pillow? The towel hanging by the toilet? Sure. The seat in front of you on the bus? Soft enough. A stranger’s shoulder? Why not!
Well, for babies, everything is at a different scale. Based on this picture, this little guy was thinking, “Hey, the opening of that shoe is the perfect size for my head.” And it is; a real Cinderella story, if you will. You know what they say: “If the shoe fits…”
Some people see an empty shelf and think, “That’s a perfect place to display my books,” or, “my pictures would look great on there.” Not this little tyke. This kid had to be pretty sleepy, because this in no way looks comfortable, but sometimes you’re so tired, anything will do.
It’s probably not a good thing when the vehicle you’re driving looks more awake than you do, but here we are. Thomas, on his part, seems super alert for his circuitous route around the living room. The conductor, however, is asleep at the wheel. It looks like this kid is trying to hide the fact that he’s asleep—look at the way his hat is pulled down over his eyes—but he isn’t fooling anyone. Props, though, for wearing a Thomas the Tank Engine hat while sitting on top of Thomas himself.
Here’s another kid that, after getting ready for a big day out—in this case, a family skiing excursion—still can’t fight how tired he is. This kid is clearly not too particular about adjusting the temperature when he sleeps. Standing upright—and on top of a big pile of snow—he nods off anyway, ready to ski off into sleepy-town. Thankfully, the skis he’s strapped into keep him upright. If he’s that adamant about sleeping, you have to wonder if a descent down the hill would even wake him up.
Who hasn’t eaten a heavy meal, only to immediately feel the food coma setting in? If you’ve ever ended a Thanksgiving pig-out session on the family couch, barely keeping your eyes open for whatever’s playing on the television, then you’ll know what this kid is going through. With a belly full of spaghetti, this kid can’t even make it to the couch, the ring of red sauce still all over his face. To his right, his brother seems to be having a grand old time eating with his hands. He probably fell asleep right after this picture was taken.
This baby is honestly trying, but you can see in those droopy eyes that the battle against sleep will be a tough one. At least this cute kid seems to be enjoying herself, even as she fights desperately to stay awake…
…and alas, those eyelids got too heavy. The struggle has finally ended. Sleep has won.
