Summer is a season when school is out, the flowers are in full bloom, and the weather is warm. It’s a prime time for participating in outdoor activities. Many people look forward to the summer so they can travel, frolic on the white sands of a beach while playing Frisbee with family and friends, and soak up the sun by slathering their skin with UV-blocking sunscreen to achieve an amazing tan. Yet, for every perfectly-bronzed Barbie and Ken in the world, there are a few who miss the target entirely and end up looking like broiled lobster tails at a five-star restaurant.
Take a look at these pictures of some hapless saps who either did not adequately apply the necessary amount of sunscreen to protect their creamy skin or just completely forgot to apply it at all. You be the judge if these funny, yet painful, sunburn photos could have been avoided.
The Celebrity Sunburn
Kimmy, Kimmy, Kimmy! For someone who projects an image of vanity, one would think you would have made sure to cover your precious silicone-filled visage with the correct amount of sunblock. The singular thought swimming through your head must be, “Oh, my God, now I have to Photoshop my Instagram pictures, ugh.” There is not enough Mac makeup to cover up this sun tanning faux pas. Kimster, if your money maker is charred red, what will your fans think? And most importantly, will the paps continue to respect your brand? This is your bread and butter honey, so protect it at all costs.
Summer sun tips: For those of you who wear sunglasses out and about during the summer, make sure that they protect your eyes from both UVA and UVB rays. Also make sure that they fit well. Include other accessories like scarves and hats to protect your scalp and face.
This gentleman somehow managed to achieve the appearance of a favorite summer delight – Neapolitan ice cream, a molded block of chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla. This type of a sunburn/tan requires an extraordinary amount of dexterity. How was he able to shield his face from the sun’s radiant kisses while exposing the exact swath of bare skin that was needed to create a replica of a tasty summertime treat? We’ll never know!
Summer sun tips: If you plan to be out in the sun on different days, keeping your style of attire the same each day can help keep you from getting burned. For instance, if you wore knee-length shorts one day, wear the same length of shorts the next. The same goes for tops.
Beer Belly Burn
This jolly red fella, with a smiley face on his tum-tum, must be a long-lost, twice-removed, disowned cousin of Santa Claus. This guy won’t be sleeping on his stomach for the next couple of weeks!
Summer sun tips: When you go out, make sure that you have an adequate amount of sunscreen to protect all of your exposed skin. Purchase a few extra bottles if you think you’ll be spending a lot of time outside this summer.
Hopefully this short gallery of epic sunburns will serve as a PSA for you future beach goers. If your skin setting goes from albino to fire-engine red real quick, it would be smart on your part to take basic safety measures to protect your epidermis from becoming internet fodder.
Make sure that you select the proper sunscreen, preferably one that protects you from both UVA rays, which cause premature aging, and UVB rays that burn your skin. If you plan to spend just a little time outdoors, it is recommended that you use an SPF 15 sunscreen. If you plan to engage in rugged activity like swimming, an SPF 30 sunblock is suggested. And if you sunburn easily, use a sunscreen with an SPF of 50. Make sure to moisturize your face, and apply generously.
Also keep in mind that sunblock wears off, and most beach goers tend to miss vital spots of their body, which results in pictures like the ones above. So a spray might be a better option than a cream or lotion. Whatever form of sunscreen you use, you should reapply it every two hours.
