Yes, you read that right – a temporary one-week leave for employees who have gotten a new puppy. This paid puppy leave is real, and the company’s employees love every minute of it.

In 2007, two guys named Martin and James decided to create a beer brewery company called BrewDog. The company has grown tremendously over the years to over 1,000 employees around the world. With their love for dogs, Martin and James decided it was only right to offer their employees a paid week off should they get a new puppy. “It’s not easy trying to juggle work and settle a new dog into your life, and many members of our crew have four-legged friends at home,” co-founder James said when discussing the new “Paw-ternity leave” policy. “So we wanted to take the stress out of the situation and let our teams take the time they need to welcome their new puppy or dog into their family,” James said, adding, “We always want to raise the bar when it comes to offering our staff the best possible benefits … We also really, really like dogs.”

Once an employee comes back from their paid puppy leave, they are even given the option to bring their new buddy to the office. According to a YouTube video the company created, BrewDog’s headquarters in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, currently has around 50 regular office dogs. The company has also recently opened a new BrewDogs in Columbus, Ohio, so people living in the United States can try and snag a job at this innovative company. The owners have promised that the new brewery in the United States will also have the same paid puppy leave benefit the United Kingdom and other locations. “We’re not aware of any other American company giving a week’s leave to their staff to help build the bond between them and their dog – but then few companies have four-legged friends at their center as we do,” a statement from Brewdog read.

On social media, hundreds of people applauded the company’s unique “Pawternity leave” idea with many users calling it a “brilliant idea” and “the greatest thing ever.” With all the publicity the beer company has received, spokeswoman Sarah Warman said that there have been an overwhelmingly large number of applications from people who want to work at BrewDog.

“It’s awesome to see puppy parental leave resonating so much with so many people,” Warman said, adding, “We’re looking forward to many of our teams taking time off to care for their new four-legged friends. Hopefully they’ll bring them into the office to meet the rest of us, too!”

The company has bars in many locations from Hong Kong to Helsinki and Sao Paulo. BrewDog is very passionate about their business, creating nothing but great tasting craft beer.
