A Kentucky woman was driving along a quiet rode when she spotted something moving in a black plastic bag. Unaware of what it could be, or if she was risking her safety, she opened the bag, and what she found trapped inside was truly unbelievable.
Malissa Lewis was driving along a familiar backroad on her way to the elementary school where she works, when she suddenly spotted the bag. Filming the whole thing on her phone, whatever was in the plastic bag seemed to be struggling. “I was scared. It was hard to process,” she said, adding, “I was afraid something would attack me.” But she knew she had to find out what it was and started to slowly rip the bag that was tied shut, and she was horrified to find a black Labrador puppy inside.
“I can’t imagine any reason for anyone to do something like that,” Lewis said. Lewis also uploaded a photo of the cute pooch to Twitter, calling the heartless person who did this, “a sicko.” She tweeted: “If this is your puppy, let me know. If you are the scoundrel who put it in a garbage bag and tossed it on the side of the road … you’re a sicko.” Her heart wrenching video has been viewed over two million times.
To Lewis’ shock, the puppy looked to be in good shape and was even wearing a collar. According to Animal Control Officer Duncan Caldwell from the Harlan County Sheriff’s Department in Kentucky, the dog appeared to be in the bag for about 15 or 20 minutes since it was in good shape despite being “tied up and [nearly] suffocated.”
After finding the adorable pup, Lewis took it to her work and had her second grade class take care of him. Since then, Lewis has named the dog “Hefty,” a name taken from the bag in which she found him, and has taken the dog home to live with her family.
Officer Caldwell added that whoever did this to the dog would be charged with “felony first-degree torture.” They still have not found the person behind this cruel act, but are advising people that need to give up an animal, to please surrender it to a local animal shelter.
Lewis’ story quickly went viral after capturing the whole horrific scene on her phone. Lewis also posted her story on Facebook and has gotten nothing but love and support from total strangers who are thankful she saved this adorable puppy. The video is hard to watch, but we’re glad it all ended happily and Hefty now has a place he can call home.
